This Giddings and Lewis Central Service Module, part number 502-03418-00 (assembly number 501-04304-00, REV-2, dated 11.98), is a large-format CNC control processor board designed for use in Giddings and Lewis machine control systems including the G&L 8000 and 8000B NumeriPath CNC platforms. This later date code example features an expanded DRAM memory array populated with KM6323568LP devices at positions U3 through U18, providing increased on-board memory capacity relative to earlier revisions. Three large yellow electrolytic capacitors provide bulk power filtering. An RTC real-time clock IC is present at position U63, and a DALE XO-43B 10.000 MHz crystal oscillator provides system timing at Y1. Memory sub-board EPROMs are labeled 502-52974-00 / 89202-00, 502-52975-00 / 89203-00, 502-52976-00 / 89204-00, and 502-52977-00 / 89205-00. SBX1 and SBX2 expansion connectors and multiple blue ribbon cable connectors are present for sub-board and inter-module interfacing. Voltage test points for +5V, +12V, and -12V are silkscreened on the left edge. The board is densely populated with through-hole and surface mount ICs and yellow SMD capacitors throughout on a green FR4 substrate. The Central Service Module manages system timing, memory, and inter-module communication within the G&L CNC control rack. With the G&L 8000 platform at end-of-life status per Fives, replacement central service modules are increasingly scarce for facilities maintaining legacy Giddings and Lewis horizontal boring mills and vertical turning centers.
