This Giddings and Lewis Color Graphics SBX board, part number 502-03504-00 (assembly number 501-04478-00, REV-1, dated 11/87, serial D04220), is a CNC operator display graphics sub-board designed for use in Giddings and Lewis CNC machine control systems including the G&L 8000 and 8000B NumeriPath platforms. The board is built around a Hitachi HD63484CP8 advanced CRT controller in a large QFP package, supported by HD63485CP32 and HD63486CP32 graphics co-processor ICs for color display generation. A DALE XO-43B 25.000 MHz crystal oscillator provides the system clock. An onboard EPROM at position U4 is labeled 502-53756-00 / 89986-00. Additional ICs include a KM41C464Z-10 DRAM and SN74HC541N buffer. FAIL and PASS status LEDs with associated fuse holders (550-0405 and 550-0205) provide onboard self-test indication. A 50-pin and 40-pin ribbon cable connector are present at the top edge for sub-board interconnection. Construction is mixed through-hole and surface mount on a green FR4 substrate with yellow SMD capacitors throughout. The Color Graphics SBX board provides the color video output function for the G&L CNC operator pendant display. With the G&L 8000 control platform at end-of-life status per Fives, color graphics boards of this type are increasingly scarce for facilities maintaining legacy Giddings and Lewis horizontal boring mills and vertical turning centers.
