Used on large engine lathes to stabilize long or heavy workpieces during turning, boring, and threading operations, this heavy duty lathe steady rest features a 4-point roller contact design providing radial support at four independently adjustable arms. The body is constructed from heavy cast iron and is painted teal, consistent with American-made industrial lathe equipment from the mid to late 20th century. Four roller-tipped arms extend from a large circular ring frame, each arm equipped with a roller bearing contact point for low-friction workpiece support. The split ring design and hinged upper section allow the steady rest to be placed around a workpiece without threading from the end.
The base incorporates machined mounting surfaces with T-slot or way-clamp geometry compatible with large gap-bed or flat-bed engine lathes. Estimated bore capacity is 24" based on visible dimensions.
Hand-written notation on the body face reads Z-1.120, X .717, and Y .056, which appear to be machine offset values from prior operational use. All four roller arms are present and intact. Surface rust and paint wear are visible throughout. This type of 4-point roller steady rest is associated with large American-made engine lathes typically used in heavy manufacturing, oil country tubular goods machining, roll turning, and large shaft work.
